How to Keep Growing as a Leader - Part 2

As discussed last week, leaders, like anyone else, need to give attention and effort to continue growing their leadership skills. This enables them to remain effective amid the ever-changing business landscape.

Thankfully, there are various ways to stay cutting edge and continue your evolution as a leader:

  • Engage in Reflective Practice: Personal reflection and self-awareness are essential to being an effective leader. Dedicated and intentional time to reflect on past successes and failures can help identify areas for improvement. Journaling is a powerful tool for documenting insights, tracking progress, and setting goals. One leader we know keeps a book of lessons learned and reviews it on a regular basis.

  • Find Inspiration: This can take many forms. Maybe it’s learning about great leaders through biographies, documentaries and interviews. Or find an inspirational passage or quote and commit yourself to reading it daily. Such activities can reignite passion, drive, and creativity.

  • Explore New Environments: Traveling, attending cultural events, or engaging in community activities can provide fresh perspectives and inspire creative thinking. Observe how different cultures and communities approach leadership and problem-solving, and consider how these insights can be applied to your own leadership practice.

  • Embrace Technology and Innovation: Us, “seasoned” folks, can feel hesitant around new technology and be reluctant to learn it. Yet experimenting with new digital tools, apps, and platforms that can streamline processes, improve communication, and foster collaboration. You can still ask your millennial aged friends for help but try to push past your comfort zone and be open to learning more.

  • Engage with your team: Foster open communication and collaboration within your team. Create relationships with your staff that make it easy for them to give you feedback without fear of negative reprisals.

  • Find a Mentor: Mentors can offer valuable feedback, share their experiences, and help you navigate complex situations.

  • Get Executive Coaching: Leadership coaches can provide customized guidance and skill development to help you reduce the stresses of leading while also improving results.

Remember, growth is not a destination but a perpetual evolution—a journey marked by curiosity, humility, and a commitment to excellence.
